The Van Sweringens build Shaker Village on old Shaker land
1905
Shaker Heights, Ohio

The brothers Oris and Mantis Van Sweringen bought this ground in 1905 and laid out a garden suburb on it, running their own rapid transit line downtown to make the lots sell. The land had belonged to the North Union Shaker community, which is where the name comes from. The historic district covers roughly seventy percent of the city and was listed on the National Register in 1984.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
