William Van Duzer Lawrence laid out Lawrence Park on the hillside here in the 1890s and sold the lots to painters, writers and architects rather than to commuters. Between 1890 and 1920 roughly two dozen nationally known artists lived in the village, among them the portrait painter William Smedley, the muralist Will Low and the critic Edmund Clarence Stedman. The whole village covers one square mile and is still part of the town of Eastchester.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
