The Van Houten House, the oldest house left in Paterson
1741
Paterson, New Jersey
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The low stone east wing went up around 1741, which makes this the oldest house still standing in Paterson. Fire took the rest, and the Van Houten family rebuilt the larger brick section in 1831 under a gambrel roof, so the two halves read as two different centuries. Washington called on the family here in 1780 while he was headquartered a few miles west at the Dey Mansion. The farmland around it passed to Hamilton's manufacturing society and became the 27 acres of Westside Park in 1888.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
