The Phillips disaster kills 23 in Pasadena
1989
Houston Chemical Complex, Pasadena, Texas
A reactor valve left open during maintenance released about 85,000 pounds of ethylene and isobutane into the Phillips Petroleum plant on October 23, 1989. The cloud found an ignition source within two minutes and detonated with the force of roughly two and a half tons of dynamite, killing 23 workers and injuring more than 300. The blast broke the plant's fire water lines, so crews fought the fire for ten hours with no working hydrants.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
