The Motiva refinery, the largest in the United States
1903
Port Arthur, Texas
The Texas Company began building here in 1902 to process crude from the Spindletop field twenty miles north, and the plant came online in 1903. It ran as Texaco's flagship, then as a Texaco and Saudi Refining joint venture, and now as Motiva. At more than six hundred thousand barrels a day it is the biggest refinery in the country, and it is the reason the air in Port Arthur has been an argument for a century.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
