The railroad turns Sewickley into the Queen of Suburbs
1851
Sewickley, Pennsylvania
The Ohio and Pennsylvania Railroad reached this farming valley in 1851 and put Pittsburgh under half an hour away, which was all it took. Money that had been made in the smoke moved twelve miles downriver, the borough incorporated in 1853, and by 1895 a local booster was calling Sewickley the Queen of Suburbs. The line that created the place carried commuters until passenger service ended in 1989.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
