Robert Fulton and William Cutting leased this East River crossing in January 1814 and put the steamboat Nassau on it that May, the first steam ferry service on the river. The trip took five to twelve minutes and cost little enough that a person could sleep in Brooklyn and work in Manhattan, which is roughly where the American commuter suburb begins. By 1872 the line was running 1,200 crossings a day. The Brooklyn Bridge took the traffic and the ferry made its last run in January 1924.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
