Hiram Leffingwell and Richard Elliott bought farmland fourteen miles out from St. Louis in 1850, at the moment the Pacific Railroad was surveying a line straight through it. They platted streets and lots around the tracks and named the place for James P. Kirkwood, the railroad's chief engineer. The town incorporated in 1853 and is counted as the first planned suburb built west of the Mississippi River.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
