The pauper cemetery under the Secaucus Junction site
2003
Secaucus Junction, Secaucus, New Jersey
Snake Hill's burial grounds took the county's poor and its asylum patients between 1880 and 1962, and were largely forgotten by the time the state came to build a rail transfer station and a new turnpike exit here. Clearance ran from 1992 to 2003, and about 4,572 sets of remains were lifted and reburied at Maple Grove Park Cemetery in Hackensack. An estimated five thousand more graves were left in the ground. The last body came out on 31 October 2003. One man identified his own grandfather among them.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
