NY Waterway restarts the Hudson ferries from a derelict rail yard

Arthur Imperatore bought two and a half miles of abandoned Weehawken waterfront from the bankrupt Penn Central in 1983 for 7.5 million dollars. Commuter ferries across the Hudson had been dead for nearly two decades, and the first sailing on 3 December 1986 carried about two dozen people, riding free. Critics called it Arthur's Folly. It grew into the largest privately owned commuter ferry operation in the country.
