Snake Hill, where Hudson County put the people it had no other place for

The county bought this 200 foot igneous rock standing alone in the marsh in 1855 and stacked its institutions on it: an almshouse, a penitentiary for 180 inmates built in 1870, an asylum that became a separate institution in 1894, and hospitals for smallpox, tuberculosis and isolation. It was renamed Laurel Hill in 1926. The penitentiary closed in 1953 after the roof came down, the rest was cleared in the early 1960s, and quarrying took most of the hill itself.
