In 1967 the city handed this district control of its own schools as an experiment. In May 1968 the local board moved more than a dozen teachers and administrators out of Junior High School 271, the union called it firing without due process, and three citywide strikes that autumn kept over a million children out of class for thirty six days. The fight tore apart the alliance between Black parents and a largely Jewish teachers union and set the city's politics for a generation.
