The fight to save Hostos Community College
1976
Grand Concourse at 149th Street, the Bronx
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The college opened in a converted tire factory in 1970 as the first bilingual public college on the mainland, named for the Puerto Rican educator Eugenio Maria de Hostos. During the 1975 fiscal crisis the Board of Higher Education voted to close it and merge it away. Students, faculty and neighbourhood groups occupied the building, marched on City Hall and won a reversal in 1976, and the college is still open.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
