Brownsville, the Brown Subdivision that a Black farmer started
1920
Miami-Dade County, Florida
The Reverend W. L. Brown, a Black farmer and landowner, settled this ground in 1920, and the place was known as Brown Subdivision before the name shortened to Brownsville. Black families moved in through the late 1940s and 1950s as Liberty Square filled and white residents left for newer suburbs. By the mid 1960s it was one of the few places in Miami-Dade where Black doctors, teachers and business owners could buy a house.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
