The North Shore Channel is cut to flush the Chicago River

Between 1907 and 1910 crews dug a canal 7.7 miles long from Wilmette Harbor to the North Branch of the Chicago River, pulling lake water inland so the river would run south toward the sanitary canal instead of into the lake. The Deep Tunnel has taken over most of that work, but the channel is still opened to the lake in heavy rain, which is why the water quality argument never quite ends. A sculpture park and a golf course now sit on its banks.
