Violet grows up around a canal cut from the river to Lake Borgne

Between 1886 and 1904 engineers widened Bayou Dupre into the Lake Borgne Canal, giving light draft boats a shortcut between the Mississippi and the sound instead of the long run down river. The settlement that formed at the canal's river end stood on old Livaudais plantation ground. Canal promoter Albert Covington Janin named it for his wife, Violet Blair Janin, and the name stuck to the town and the waterway both.
