The Port Arthur canal digs a lake shore into a deepwater port
1899
Port Arthur, Texas

Sabine Lake is shallow, so the town Stilwell platted could only become a port by cutting its own way to the Gulf. The Port Arthur canal was dug through to deep water and opened in 1899, and the intracoastal link followed in 1908. Everything downstream of that ditch, the refineries, the shipyards and the tanker traffic that still runs day and night, follows from it.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
