The Lockport Powerhouse, the oldest hydroelectric plant in Illinois
1907
Lockport, Illinois
Chicago reversed its river in 1900 and sent its sewage down the new Sanitary and Ship Canal instead of into the lake it drank from. The powerhouse finished at Lockport in 1907 is where that flow is controlled, and it has been generating electricity off the drop ever since. It also governs how much Lake Michigan water Chicago may divert, a quantity the other Great Lakes states have fought over for more than a century.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
