Weehawken Terminal, the West Shore Railroad's door to New York
1884

To reach the Hudson the New York, West Shore and Buffalo Railroad had to get through the Palisades, so between 1881 and 1883 it bored a tunnel straight through the diabase of Bergen Hill. The terminal at the far end opened in 1884 and put passengers onto ferries for Manhattan. The New York Central absorbed the line and ran it until the terminal closed in 1959.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
