The Baytown Tunnel is dug up so the channel can go deeper
1953
Baytown, Texas
From 1953 a two lane tube ran 4,110 feet under the Houston Ship Channel, the only way to drive from Baytown to La Porte without going miles around. It closed in 1995 when the bridge above it opened. Then it had to go entirely: its roof sat at a depth of 40 feet and the Army Corps wanted the channel dredged to 45, so demolition began in 1997.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
