The branch opened on Tujunga Avenue in 1929, designed by the father and son architects Eugene Weston and Eugene Weston Jr., and carried the name of the poet Sidney Lanier for half a century. The city renamed it in 1981 for Amelia Earhart, who was living a short way south in Toluca Lake when she disappeared over the Pacific in 1937. The building is a Los Angeles Cultural Historic Monument and is on the National Register.
