Toluca Lake, the private lake the Los Angeles River used to feed

Investors bought this ground in 1923 and sold it as Toluca Lake Park, taking the name from a natural lake that artesian springs once fed. Paving the Los Angeles River in 1938 and pumping down the water table killed the springs, and the lake is now kept going by wells and paid for by the property owners around it. The neighbourhood sits wedged between Burbank, Universal City and North Hollywood.
