The Melvin Price Federal Building, still the courthouse for southern Illinois
1909

James Knox Taylor, the supervising architect of the Treasury, drew this Beaux-Arts post office and courthouse in 1907, and it opened in 1909 with four pairs of columns carrying a pediment above the entrance. The post office is long gone. The building still works as a courthouse of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois, one of the few downtown blocks here that never lost its purpose. It carries the name of Charles Melvin Price, who represented the district in Congress for more than four decades.
