The Kirkland shipyard that built the Kalakala and repaired 477 ships

The yard at Houghton launched the ferry Kalakala in July 1935, rebuilt on the burned hull of the Peralta and often called the first streamlined vessel in the world. It then turned to war work, running about eight thousand people across three shifts at its peak, building twenty nine warships for the Navy including Barnegat class seaplane tenders and repairing 477 damaged ships. Shipbuilding ended with the war. The Carillon Point office complex stands on the site.
