The Julington-Durbin Preserve is bought before the subdivisions reach it
2001
Jacksonville, Florida
The city, the state and the St. Johns River Water Management District paid about 16.5 million dollars in 2001 for the 2,031 acre peninsula caught between Julington Creek and Durbin Creek, one of the larger purchases under Mayor John Delaney's Preservation Project. The tract had been squarely in the path of the housing that was filling in Jacksonville's southern edge. It now carries three marked hiking trails plus horse and bicycle routes through pine flatwoods and sandhill.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
