Spring Creek Forest Preserve, old-growth woods a self-taught botanist saved
1978
Garland, Texas
Robert Nunnally · CC BY 2.0 · Wikimedia Commons
In 1978 Bobby C. Scott, a self-taught botanist, spotted plants in a strip of Garland woodland that only grow under forest which has never been cleared. He spent the next decade pushing the city and the county to protect it. Settlers cut nearly every stand of timber in this part of Texas for lumber or farmland, so the surviving trees here, some of them two and three centuries old, are close to unique inside the metroplex.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
