Compton Creek keeps the last soft bottom on the Los Angeles River

Compton Creek runs about eight and a half miles and is the last major tributary to reach the Los Angeles River before the river meets the ocean. Almost all of it is a concrete flood channel, but a stretch of roughly half a mile below Greenleaf Boulevard was never paved and still carries an earthen bed and wetland. In 2010 the EPA administrator stood on its bank to announce that the entire Los Angeles River would be treated as navigable water, a ruling that pulled the whole system under federal clean water protection.
