Hugh Roberts, a Jersey City architect, finished this Beaux-Arts courthouse in 1910 and had its rotunda painted by Kenyon Cox, Edwin Blashfield, Howard Pyle and Francis Millet, the man who directed the decoration of the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. The county closed it in the 1960s and scheduled it for demolition to make room for parking. Residents fought that for two decades, it reopened in 1985, and in 1988 it was renamed for Justice William J. Brennan.
