Plains Conservation Center keeps a thousand acres of shortgrass prairie
1952
Aurora, Colorado
The center was set up in 1949 to teach farmers and ranchers about soil erosion and water on the dry plains, and it opened to the public in 1952. It holds roughly a thousand acres of never ploughed shortgrass prairie on Aurora's eastern edge, with a replica homestead village and a tipi camp on the ground. The nonprofit that ran it dissolved and the city took over management in 2017, which is how a suburb of 400,000 ended up owning a working piece of the high plains.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
