Alexander Turney Stewart opened it in 1874 as the front door of the town he was building from scratch on the Hempstead Plains, and ran it himself until he died two years later. McKim, Mead and White designed the replacement that opened in 1895 and burned to the ground in 1899, then designed the third one, which opened in 1901. Charles Lindbergh took a room here the night before he flew to Paris and slept almost none of it. The building standing today is the fourth to carry the name.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
