The Niobrara, where six ecosystems meet
1991
Cherry County, Nebraska
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The river cuts a canyon along a seam where eastern hardwood, northern boreal, Rocky Mountain pine and three kinds of prairie all overlap, so species that meet nowhere else grow within sight of one another. Around two hundred waterfalls drop into it from the canyon walls, and it is one of the most canoed rivers in the plains.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
