More than six thousand acres of pecan, elm and ash sit on the Trinity River floodplain in southern Dallas, several times the size of Central Park and inside the city limits. Much of it grew back on its own: cotton fields were abandoned, the river flooded, and seed carried down from upstream did the planting. For decades the woods doubled as a dumping ground, until the city adopted a management plan in 1997 and a council resolution in 2019 to protect the acreage.
