A forest planted by hand in the Sandhills
1902
Halsey, Nebraska
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Charles Bessey, a university botanist, argued the Sandhills had once been wooded and could be again, and persuaded the government to try. Seedlings were raised at a nursery here and set out by hand across the dunes, producing the largest hand-planted forest in the country, a rectangle of pine on grassland, visible from orbit.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
