Big Oak Tree, what the Bootheel looked like before

Around a thousand acres of bottomland hardwood left standing when the rest of the Bootheel swamp was drained for cotton, bought by public subscription in the 1930s because schoolchildren and local people raised the money. Several of the trees are state champions and a few have been national ones. A boardwalk runs out over the wet ground, which is the only way to stand in the forest that used to cover this whole corner of the state.
