Fernbank Forest, 65 acres of old growth one woman refused to sell
1967
Fernbank, DeKalb County, Georgia
James Emery · CC BY 2.0 · Wikimedia Commons
Emily Harrison spent decades turning down developers for this stand of woods, and named it for a fern-covered creek bank she was fond of. The 65 acres hold white oak and tulip poplar reaching 156 feet, tall enough for the Piedmont that scientists have studied the place for it. In 1964 the trustees handed management to the DeKalb County school board in exchange for free public access, and the forest opened to visitors in 1967 while Harrison was still alive to see it.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
