Congaree's old-growth bottomland
1976
Richland County, South Carolina
Miguel.v · CC BY-SA 3.0 · Wikimedia Commons
The largest tract of old-growth bottomland hardwood left in the country, saved by a campaign begun when logging resumed in 1969. Its floodplain grows some of the tallest trees in eastern North America, and it holds one of the highest forest canopies anywhere.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
