The George Washington Bridge doubled the record span

Othmar Ammann's bridge opened to traffic on October 25, 1931 with a main span of 3,500 feet, nearly twice the Ambassador Bridge in Detroit, which had held the record until then. The towers were meant to be cased in granite. The Depression killed the budget and the bare steel was left showing, which Le Corbusier called the only seat of grace in a disorderly city. A lower deck opened in August 1962 and made it the only fourteen lane suspension bridge in the world. It now carries more vehicles than any bridge anywhere.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
