The Fort Lee lane closures
2013
George Washington Bridge approach, Fort Lee, New Jersey

For four mornings in September 2013 the local access lanes feeding the George Washington Bridge from Fort Lee were cut from three to one, and the borough gridlocked while ambulances crawled. Port Authority officials called it a traffic study. Two aides to Governor Chris Christie were convicted of fraud in 2016 over the closures, which prosecutors said were retaliation against Fort Lee's mayor for not endorsing him. The Supreme Court threw the convictions out in 2020, holding unanimously that abusing power over lane allocation was not federal fraud.
