Bethlehem threw up a yard on the south shore of the Middle Branch in 1941 purely to mass produce cargo ships, and on 27 September that year it launched the SS Patrick Henry, the first Liberty ship. Fairfield went on to build 384 of them, more than any other yard, plus escort carriers and tank landing ships. It shut down in 1945 as fast as it had opened. Petrochemical plants and later shipyards took the ground.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
