The Richmond shipyards built more ships than anywhere else in the country
1942
Richmond, California
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Four Kaiser run yards on the Richmond waterfront turned out Liberty and Victory ships faster than any other yard in the United States, on some days finishing three. The workforce came from across the country and included tens of thousands of women and Black workers hired into trades that had been closed to them. Yard 3 is on the National Register and the ground is now part of a national historical park.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
