The Essex Company Machine Shop, where a company built a city
1846

The Essex Company dammed the Merrimack and laid Lawrence out on paper before there was a town to speak of. This stone machine shop went up in 1846 to make the equipment the new mills needed, which meant the corporation was manufacturing its own means of manufacturing. It is one of the oldest buildings in the city and went on the National Register in 1972.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
