The Great Stone Dam turns the Merrimack into Lawrence
1848
Merrimack River, Lawrence, Massachusetts
John Phelan · CC BY 3.0 · Wikimedia Commons
Between 1845 and 1848 the Essex Company laid a granite dam nine hundred feet across the Merrimack at Bodwell's Falls, thirty five feet high, and then laid out a city around the power it made. It still feeds the north and south canals. Lawrence is one of the few American cities that existed as an engineering drawing before it existed as a place.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
