The Clark Thread mills and the Scots who came with them

George Clark brought his family's thread business over from Paisley and began manufacturing on the Passaic in the mid 1860s, then pushed the mills across the river into East Newark, Harrison and Kearny. The six cord soft finished thread he sold as O.N.T., for Our New Thread, was made for the sewing machine and carried the firm to the front of the trade. More than a thousand people worked for Clark by 1870 and thousands more afterwards, many recruited out of Paisley. East Newark, cut from Kearny in 1895 and one of the smallest municipalities in the state, exists because of these mills.
