1927

Superintendent William Wirt transferred a handful of Black students into Emerson to relieve overcrowding, six in 1926 and eighteen more in 1927. White students then walked out, and the protest grew to roughly 1,300 students and parents refusing to go back inside until the Black students were removed. Wirt gave in, transferred them out and established a separate school for Black students, Theodore Roosevelt High School.
