Pulaski, one of the first Gary neighbourhoods to integrate
1920
Gary, Indiana
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
White millworkers of eastern European descent settled this triangular neighbourhood between the 1920s and the 1950s. It was among the first parts of Gary to integrate as Black families moved in, and by 2000 it was about 97 per cent African American. Industrial land separates it from Aetna to the east and Emerson to the north.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
