Lincoln High School, where Port Arthur's Black students went until 1965
1904
Port Arthur, Texas
Lincoln opened in 1904 as the school for Port Arthur's Black students and stayed that way until the district desegregated in 1965. Desegregation did not balance it. White families largely did not enrol, and Lincoln stayed overwhelmingly Black for another thirty seven years. It closed in 2002 when the city folded Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson and Stephen F. Austin into a single Memorial High School.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
