William Wirt and the Gary Plan that 200 American cities copied

Wirt arrived as Gary's school superintendent in 1907 and built the work study play system, which kept buildings in constant use by rotating classes through shops, laboratories, gyms, auditoriums and playgrounds instead of leaving rooms sitting idle. By 1929 more than 200 cities had adopted some version of the Gary Plan. This high school on the Miller side of town carried his name from the late 1930s until it closed in 2009.
