The Dorais Velodrome, a banked concrete track built by volunteers
1969
Detroit, Michigan
The Michigan Bicycling Federation built this one fifth mile track in Dorais Park in 1969 for about 50,000 dollars, most of the labour donated, on ground the city handed over for the purpose. The banking runs to 45 degrees and the track opened in late July that year, just ahead of the National Bicycle Racing Championships. The Wolverine Sports Club and the city recreation department ran races and training classes on it for twenty years. The concrete then broke up past the point of racing and the track has sat unused since.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
