Newark Velodrome, when bike racing filled stadiums
1912
South Orange Avenue at Munn Avenue, Vailsburg, Newark, New Jersey
A banked wooden track stood at this corner in Vailsburg from 1911, six laps to the mile, with seats for 12,500 and a grass infield. Bicycle racing was a major spectator sport and this was its American capital: the 1912 world track championships here drew an estimated 20,000 people to a stadium built for 12,500, and Frank Kramer took the professional sprint title on the boards. Reggie McNamara set five world records at the track between 1915 and 1917. The lease ran out and the velodrome was pulled down on 4 December 1930.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
