Built in 1854 on a hill above the Huron valley, this was the first building at the University of Michigan put up for research rather than teaching, and one of the oldest observatories of its kind anywhere in the country. It set the pattern for American universities treating original science as part of the job. Michigan made it a state historic site in 1958 and it was listed nationally in 1973.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
